Overview
The evolution of MPLS-based metro services from the early adopters phase to today's mainstream, brings with it the need for cost-effective and compact solutions for the network edge. In the rapidly growing area of Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs), several applications benefit from the extension of MPLS-based service delivery to the edge of the network, and the NetIron M2404 family does exactly that, while also addressing the tight constraints of space, power, and cooling found in many deployment scenarios.
The NetIron M2404 is a high-density, versatile, compact MPLS metro access switch family. Occupying a single Rack Unit (RU), the NetIron M2404 metro access switches are part of Foundry's NetIron family of products that are engineered to meet the expanding requirements of service providers. The device features 24 10/100 ports, two 1-GbE fiber/copper combo ports, and two enhanced services 1-GbE ports. It is available in both fiber and copper (RJ-45) models. In addition, the fiber model uses pluggable optics, allowing a range of optics to be used in both single-strand and dual-strand fiber networks. These capabilities make the NetIron M2404 switches the most versatile MPLS MTU devices available in the industry today. The NetIron M2404 metro access switches, together with the NetIron MLX metro routers and NetIron XMR core routers, make the NetIron product family a complete MPLS-enabled solution that addresses the gamut of service provider needs.
