Foundry Networks And EMC Corporation Announce Interoperability Agreement To Optimize The Performance And Management Of Complex Network Infrastructures

Customers Can Maximize Performance and Management of Mission-critical IT Resources by Using Certified Foundry Switches and Routers with EMC Smarts

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – (Oct. 30, 2007) – Foundry Networks®, Inc. (NASDAQ: FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, and EMC® Corporation (NYSE: EMC), the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced an interoperability agreement to accelerate the deployment of operationally advanced network management solutions on a high-performance network infrastructure. The agreement will simplify infrastructure management for customers using Foundry™ products and EMC Smarts® solutions by using technologies to rapidly automate the end-to-end management of advanced high-performance networking infrastructures.

As part of this agreement, both companies will cooperate in the areas of pre-certification and joint interoperability testing of Foundry's high performance routing and switching product portfolio with Smarts management software. Customers of both EMC and Foundry that implement this joint solution will benefit through an industry-leading operational management tool that simplifies operations and management of a high-performance network based on Foundry's rich product portfolio. With this pre-integrated solution, customers can automate the management of complex, dynamic, and distributed environments that are based on a high-performance networking infrastructure.

Smarts' model-based technology is the foundation for operational actions such as configuration discovery, event correlation, automated root cause analysis, impact analysis and operational triage automation. Using Smarts' methodology, network administrators can simplify operations and ensure high availability of network services for the network being managed.

Foundry Networks has a broad portfolio of products that deliver uncompromised wire-speed performance, advanced service delivery capabilities, high versatility, superior port density and very high traffic capacity. Whether used for core/backbone/edge connectivity or Ethernet aggregation, Foundry's solutions have the power, capacity and redundancy features required by network operators. Foundry products supported include:

  • NetIron® XMR – a series of high-performance IPv4/IPv6/MPLS backbone routers, including the industry's only wire-speed backbone router with 128 10-gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports in a single chassis
  • NetIron MLX – a series of high-performance MPLS-enabled aggregation and metro routers, including the industry's only wire-speed metro router with 128 10GbE ports in a single chassis
  • The BigIron® RX – a series of terabit-scale, Layer 2/3 Ethernet switches, including the industry's only wire-speed Layer 3 switch with 128 10GbE ports in a single chassis
  • FastIron® SuperX™ – a series of modular Layer 2/3 converged Ethernet switches
  • FastIron Edge X – a series of advanced Layer 2/3 Ethernet edge switches

"We are excited to be entering into this agreement with Foundry, a globally recognized leader in network routing and switching solutions," said Chris Gahagan, EMC's senior vice president, Resource Management.  "Seamless interoperability and certification of Foundry's high performance networking products with the EMC Smarts family of management solutions will only strengthen and enhance the ability of our joint customers to manage, as well as maximize the value of their IT infrastructures."

Using Smarts management solutions, customers with Foundry networking hardware can now:

  • Achieve end-to-end visibility and control of critical business services
  • Automatically model components and their relationships across networks to understand their effect on IT services
  • Analyze data from multiple sources to pinpoint root cause problems – automatically, and in real time

"Foundry has always believed in the importance of delivering manageable and reliable high-performance networking infrastructure and equipment," said Ken Cheng, vice president and general manager for Foundry's High-End and Service Provider Systems Business Unit. "We are very pleased to be working with EMC to promote interoperability and the certification of Foundry's industry-leading networking systems with EMC's Smarts family of management solutions in order to optimize network performance, reliability and availability."
