Foundry Flash - February 2007

Welcome to the May 2007 Edition of Foundry Flash!

IronView Network Manager Closes the Security Loop

Foundry offers a unique Intrusion Detection and Prevention System based on embedded sFlow technology, an industry standard for real-time traffic monitoring. This capability provides a closed-loop intrusion detection security solution that is highly scalable and supports real-time, network-wide mitigation. This security solution has three key elements: the embedded sFlow capability in Foundry switches and routers, Foundry's IronView® Network Manager, and the open source SNORT® signature IDS software.

The embedded sFlow capability in Foundry's switches and routers gathers data from the edge, perimeter, aggregation, and core networking equipment. sFlow data is sent to IronView Network Manager, which functions as an sFlow collector. This data can come from any Foundry device, and IronView Network Manager converts and pipes this data into a variety of open source IDS platforms, including SNORT.

Anomalous events seen by SNORT are delivered back to IronView Network Manager through its event manager, where they are subsequently processed. IronView Network Manager can apply a set of remediation security policies to limit the spread of this malicious or accidental attack by disabling the ingress port of the switch, setting a MAC or Layer 3 access control, rate limiting the port, notifying the IT staff, or a myriad of other user-definable actions.
