10 Gigabit Ethernet Q/A with Foundry's Bill Ryan

Why is now the right time to consider 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Ethernet is becoming a pervasive technology that is mature and well known. Server farms are exploding; applications are requiring faster networking pipes; and networking is cheaper. Server and network storage device architectures have advanced to take advantage of 10Gig. As 10Gig becomes more cost effective, more enterprises can justify and afford it. These enterprises are realizing they have to migrate to 10Gig because of the sheer number of servers in their data centers, the operational advantages, and decreased OPX costs.

The current emphasis on green power is another contributor. 10Gig solutions consume much less power than multiple Gigabit Ethernet solutions. Green power continues to gain momentum, and it is slowly becoming a competitive advantage for global corporations to adopt environmentally conscious initiatives.

What unique value do you see Foundry playing in the adoption and migration of 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
We are the only networking vendor that has refreshed our entire line with state-of-the art technology for 10Gig performance from edge to core. Our solutions are already geared for 10Gig at the edge, access or distribution layer. All modules are field upgradeable, so you can add 10Gig where you want it, as you need it.

What advice do you have for CIOs, IT leaders and data center managers who are evaluating and deploying 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
From a connectivity point of view, look at current standards and how standards are developing. Keep an eye on interoperability testing so you know what products are interoperable with your current environment. Leverage your existing wire plans and avoid disrupting your network.

Don't limit yourself to your current vendor. Look at every vendor so you can do the best for your network and save money. And finally, consider equipment that will grow as your business grows.

What is the one thing that enterprises need to know to deploy a successful 10Gig environment?
If you understand Ethernet, you will understand 10 Gigabit Ethernet. There's no special learning here; other than some restraints on cabling. The fact that it's Ethernet should be a calming factor.
