The operating system that's at the heart of Foundry Networks' ServerIron family of application delivery and traffic management switches has gotten a major upgrade with many important new features.
The TrafficWorks software—which is supported on the ServerIron 4G Series, ServerIron GT C and GT E Series, and ServerIron 350, 450, 850, and Plus Series—has been successfully deployed in thousands of networks and offers important capabilities such as data theft prevention that protects enterprises against service downtime; a Web application firewall capability that provides security policies that can be user-configured to allow or deny incoming HTTP requests; and the ability to enhance application security and streamline content delivery.
With this most recent version of TrafficWorks, there are many more reasons to bring the ServerIron switches into the enterprise.
Better Administration, More Flexibility The 10.2 software release of TrafficWorks adds a better user interface, greater administrative capabilities, and a higher level of flexibility for businesses.
The enhanced graphical user interface (GUI) offers better device management through two methods for configuration. The first is an industry-standard command line interface (CLI), which is extremely flexible and powerful. This option is particularly useful for network and systems managers who already understand CLI and need the additional power that it provides to configure complex Layer 4 and Layer 7 application and security policies.
The new intuitive GUI can be used to quickly and reliably setup ServerIron for basic functions such as:
- Creating Real Servers
- Creating Virtual Servers
- Managing Real to Virtual Server bindings
- Managing Virtual/Real Servers and Ports
The new GUI is easy to operate and can be used to rapidly deploy ServerIron without needing to know details of the CLI.
Another new feature of TrafficWorks is role-based management (RBM), which allows the creation of different administrative domains on ServerIron. Users can be assigned as operators, viewers, or managers for a given context or for global configurations. The RBM features are supported both in the CLI and the GUI.
The RBM features also increase the total user count to 1,024 users and provides up to 256 uniquely named contexts. A number of role templates provide easier RBM assignments for both users and managers of ServerIron. The RBM functionality also helps network and systems managers to ensure the safe and reliable operation of their application delivery controller solutions.
Security, Health Check Keep Switch Ports in Line TrafficWorks 10.2 also enhances UDP SIP server load balancing capability by making it stateful, which adds more flexibility to this existing feature. In addition, this new version includes SSL enhancements, including an increase of the SSL certificate count to 512. Also, Source Port Address Translation (PAT) for SSL eliminates the source Network Address Translation (NAT) requirement with SSL service blades.
Several health check enhancements specifically geared to ServerIron virtual service ports have also been added to release 10.2. The Health Check Policy for VIP Port allows specifications of the health check under VIP port; the Minimum Healthy Real Servers on VIP Port feature marks a VIP port as healthy only if a specified number of real serves are available under that port; and the Real Server Application Port Bring Up Enhancement marks an application port healthy only after successful health checks for a pre-configured number of retries. The health check feature also includes a scripted health check for UDP.
Additionally, TrafficWorks 10.2 includes a feature that allows ServerIron switches to identify an application port to be TCP-Only or UDP-Only.
All these advanced features and functionality make it clear why the powerful combination of TrafficWorks and ServerIron is the industry leader in high availability, acceleration, security, and scalability for business-critical IP, Web, and VoIP applications.

New graphical user interface in TrafficWorks 10.2 makes for rapid deployment and easy management of ServerIron switches.
